Responsibilities of a Forklift Driver
The job of a forklift operator is to be able to transport materials from one place to another, normally in factories and warehouses. Drivers require specialized training, that is commonly provided by the workplace. Prospective drivers should be able to pass a background check and a drug test.
Performing Inspections
Performing safety and functionality checks on a daily basis is part of the various responsibilities of a forklift operator. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration mandates that all types of forklifts be inspected prior to use. The driver should inspect the forklift once more at the end of the shift. Yearly safety training is a very important part of the job description of a forklift operator.
Unloading and Loading
Forklift drivers use controls on the forklift to load and unload supplies and to be able to stack products efficiently and in a timely manner.
Weighing Materials
A forklift operator's responsibilities consist of weighing the materials they are transporting, and logging the weights.
Quality Control
Quality control is another important part of the forklift driver's job. This involves ensuring orders are correct and making sure the materials do not sustain damage while moving them.
Battery Maintenance and Care
Caring for the forklift battery helps guarantee a long life span for the unit. Maintenance and care procedures consist of checking the level of water inside the battery approximately every five charge cycles, filling the cell to just above the visible protector, being careful not to overflow the water, and cleaning up any spills. Once a battery is charging, never interrupt the cycle.
PPE: Personal Protective Equipment
Personal Protective Equipment is required when doing work on the forklift battery, like checks of water levels. Both hand protection and eye protection must be worn, and a fire extinguisher and acid spill kit should be on hand. Forklift operators must always observe safety regulations. The charging area must be kept ventilated and clear of open flame.
